How to build a railing

Recently moved into my house and the previous owners have built wood deck off the back. It is quite a bit lower than the house so they built a landing (forgive me if this isn’t the right term) with stairs off to the left (looking out the back door).

Here lies my problem. Since it is a sharp left to the stairs, if you aren’t familiar with the property, or not paying attention, you will walk right off the landing and I’m afraid someone is going to get hurt.

I have included a picture of the stairs and landing here.

Thank you in advance!

Local building codes only require a railing for stairs with 4 steps or more, hence why the previous owner didn’t install one.

Your insurance company may require a railing. That’s what happened to me. I had an identical situation with actually less steps and my insurance company threatened to terminate the contract if I didn’t install a railing within a few days. I had my contractor fix something up quick with a bunch of wood planks from Home Depot.
